Young dancer, old traditions
Young dancer, old traditions
Bossangoa, Central African Republic — “The town had been through all the worst atrocities of CAR’s civil war. By the time I arrived there, it was in recovery and trying to heal itself from years of conflict. Aid workers had set up traditional dance groups and football teams for the town’s teenage boys and girls to bring the community together, keep a traditional culture alive and steer kids away from the lure of armed groups. One hot afternoon, down by Bossangoa’s bare-earth football pitch, this girl and her dance ensemble were in full flow shortly before kick off - swaying, spinning and shaking in time to a driving, hypnotic rhythm. At that joyous moment, the lingering conflict felt very far away”
