Rangers
Bamingui-Bangoran National Park, Central African Republic — “It was mid morning and the wildlife rangers rested for a few minutes on the trunk of a fallen tree. Jean lit a cigarette, Vincent scanned the woods and Mickaël sat in silence at the back. They were among a few dozen men tasked with protecting the last remaining animals of the Bamingui-Bangoran National Park in CAR’s rebel-held north where years of relentless poaching and civil war have pushed this sanctuary to the brink. After a smoke and a small pause, the rangers got up and resumed their patrol.”
