Kampala, Uganda — “Run by twin brothers, Hassan and Hussein, East Coast Boxing offers a lifeline for youth living around the Naguru Godown slum of the Ugandan capital. Most of the lads who train there can’t afford to pay so they’re allowed in for free. The twin founders are there every day, overseeing workouts and training but also stepping in occasionally as mentors. It’s run on a shoe string — gloves are in short supply and battered punching bags are held together by tape. But despite the odds their young boxers have triumphed repeatedly at national championships. ‘I’m trying my best to make this a better area,’ Hassan told me during one of my visits there. ‘I just want to push the boys to have a good future’.
