A front-line walk
Zaitseve, Ukraine — “More than two years into the war in eastern Ukraine, August was becoming known as a bad month. Fighting would usually intensify right up until the start of September, just before children living in the conflict zone would return to school and a new truce would be called. During yet another violent summer in 2016, I embedded with Ukrainian government soldiers in the front-line village of Zaitseve, camping out in an abandoned cottage and interviewing the last remaining civilians who had decided to stay behind in utter defiance of the war. One morning, this soldier took me out to the last line of defence on the edge of no-man’s land. There, the trenches of the opposing sides were so close that soldiers could shout abuse at each other and take turns to blast their national anthems across the divide”
